Course Overview

Despite many barriers, children with hearing loss (CHL) have unprecedented opportunities to excel linguistically, academically and socially, with the ultimate goal of acquiring skills at a similar rate to their hearing siblings and peers. In order to achieve this goal, it is imperative that professionals and caregivers working with CHL maintain a robust knowledge base of typical development in order to evaluate a child’s current status and remain in an appropriate “zone of proximal development”.

This learning experience focuses on areas of typical development for children from 36-60 months and answers several important questions: What physical and cognitive development is expected at this age, and when should a professional consider an evaluation from a provider outside their scope of practice? Why is it important to include social and emotional goals into your practice? How are speech and language development impacted by access to sound? What is Theory of Mind (ToM) and how can you identify which children in your practice are most at-risk for a ToM delay?

At the end of this course, participants will have a better understanding of the explosion of physical and cognitive development a child from 36-60 months is experiencing, with a particular focus on social and emotional learning including Theory of Mind.

Course Timeline

30 Days

Key Outcomes

  • Describe typical physical and cognitive development for a 3-5 year old child, and evaluate whether the children on your caseload may require an outside referral for a diagnosis secondary to hearing loss.
  • Explain three reasons why it is important to include social and emotional goals into your practice.
  • Analyze how speech and language development are impacted by access to sound.
  • Define Theory of Mind (ToM) and evaluate which children in your practice are most at-risk for a ToM delay.
