Course Overview

Reliable and valid hearing thresholds cannot be determined with behavioral audiologic measures in infants until they are at least five to six months of age. Also, some children with neurodevelopmental and other disabilities are unable to provide threshold-level responses during behavioral audiologic assessment. In these cases, electrophysiologic measures may be used to evaluate the auditory function of infants and young children and estimate hearing thresholds. This learning session will provide an overview of the fundamentals of auditory evoked response measures including the neurophysiologic and electroacoustic principles underlying auditory evoked responses measures. This session will summarize a clinical protocol for the completion of auditory brainstem response (ABR) measures and auditory steady state response (ASSR) assessments. This session will also provide a summary of contemporary stimulus and acquisition parameters and analysis methods designed to optimize the ability to evaluate the auditory function of infants via the use of auditory evoked response measurements. This session will also discuss the cross-check principle as it relates to the use of multiple electrophysiologic measures of auditory function (e.g., ABR, ASSR, distortion product otoacoustic emission assessment, middle ear measurements).

Key Outcomes

  • Describe the physiologic principles underlying the production of an ABR and cochlear microphonic response and acquisition parameters commonly found in pediatric ABR assessment.
  • Describe at least two stimulus parameters commonly used in pediatric ABR and will describe contemporary ABR systems including at least three modern techniques designed to optimize stimulus properties, response acquisition, or response analysis.
  • Describe analysis of ABR waveforms and will describe at least three components of a clinical protocol to complete ABR assessment in infants and young children.
  • Describe at least three techniques used to analyze ASSR responses.
