Course Overview

This learning experience will emphasize Auditory-Verbal (AV) teaching strategies to maximize a child’s auditory potential from babies to school age. Strategies targeting various auditory skill levels to develop exceptional conversational abilities will be presented utilizing videotaped segments. Integrating AV strategies in home, play, and school routines and in sharing books will be highlighted. Participants will gain practical information to facilitate spoken language development through listening in a developmental hierarchy so that children with hearing loss can become engaging conversationalists.

Key Outcomes

  • Describe Auditory-Verbal strategies and their importance to maximize a child’s spoken language skills through learning to listen. 
  • Summarize at least 6 Auditory-Verbal teaching strategies and techniques to create a listening environment, facilitate a child’s auditory attention, and enhance a child’s auditory perception of speech. 
  • Summarize at least 6 Auditory-Verbal strategies and techniques to promote a child’s knowledge of language, facilitate spoken language and cognition, and stimulate independent thinking.
  • Describe at least 5 ways to integrate auditory-verbal teaching strategies into the child’s home, play, and social routines including sharing books with a child to facilitate his or her conversational skills.

    Teresa H. Caraway, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. With more than 35 years’ experience in Auditory-Verbal practice, consulting, and presenting, Dr. Caraway is the Founding CEO of Hearing First, and served as the Founding President of the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language and Co-Founder and Executive Co-Director of Hearts for Hearing. She served on the Board of Auditory-Verbal International and was a founding board member of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance.
