Course Overview

It is amazing that most children learn to speak so easily and naturally. With early identification of hearing loss and fitting of appropriate hearing technology, children with hearing loss today can develop spoken language on par with their hearing peers. In fact, many children do not require direct speech intervention at all. Children with hearing loss who do not have access to all the sounds of speech even periodically may exhibit atypical speech development. This is the time when parents and professionals will need a knowledge of speech development and speech acoustics, and the skills to assess specific errors and determine a solution. In this course we will examine the features of speech and how this fundamental human ability develops from babbling to clear articulation. You will understand how inadequate access to all the sounds of speech can disrupt natural speech acquisition and how to examine the features of speech and their auditory and other sensory correlates. All these aspects will be considered when we determine how to facilitate speech both developmentally and remedially for children with hearing loss.
