Overview

Collaboration and Counseling in Audiology and Listening and Spoken Language Service Delivery

As professionals supporting families of children with hearing loss, we play a unique role in guiding and coaching families as they learn and practice new skills to support their child’s listening and spoken language (LSL) development. Many families apply newly learned skills (meeting full time device wear time, integrating LSL strategies, attending appointments), and others face challenges in implementing these new changes in their lives. At the core of professional service, providing the right assistance is the pathway to success. This involves having the right knowledge, but also possessing the insight and skill to help families accept and utilize it. The new series “Collaboration and Counseling in AuD and LSL Service Delivery” explores the concepts of Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Change, Infant Mental Health and Reflective Supervision and their application to AuD and LSL interventions to support families and their child’s listening and spoken language success and enhance LSL professional practice. Click here to learn more about the series.

Part 2

There are a number of barriers to optimal hearing device wear time in youth. Some are driven by system level challenges such as SDOH, health care access, and racism. Others are modifiable at the individual/family level. This presentation will focus on behavioral interventions as one effective tool for helping families increase their child’s device wear time. These tools can be used by professionals working directly with families, with modest training.

Featuring

Kimberly Guion Reynolds Ph.D., ABPP

Dr. Reynolds is a pediatric psychologist and Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University. She has specialized, since 2010, in working with youth with special health care needs including chronic medical conditions and developmental disabilities. Dr. Reynolds engages in a blend of direct clinical care and research and is the Training Director for the Psychology Internship Program at OHSU. Her current research focuses on program development and training. She developed an interprofessional provider training related to improving patient adherence to hearing device wear time, which is also a current focus of her research. Dr. Reynolds is a member of the Society of Pediatric Psychology and her faculty role is supported in part by funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA).
