Overview

The learning experience will provide detailed information regarding the requirements and components needed for independent reading and literacy. Specifically, learners will focus on the connections between vocabulary, oral language, phonological awareness, and story re-telling for children 4-8 years of age. Sessions will emphasize knowledge of evidence-based literacy practices and practical application to include strategies, activities, and parent coaching and guidance.

Kathryn Wilson Linder M.A., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT

Kathryn Wilson Linder M.A., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT is a speech-language pathologist, teacher of the deaf and Listening-Spoken Language Specialist, with many years of experience in public school, private practice, home-based, and clinical settings. From 2014 until 2018, Kathryn held the position of Coaching and Mentoring Leader for Hearing First, This followed a position as Director of FIRST YEARS at the UNC-Chapel Hill. Kathryn is a founding member of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance, has been a member of the Coordinating Committee for the American Speech and Hearing Association Special Interest Group, Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood and has served on the Board for The CARE Project. Kathryn has contributed to the professional literature as an author of several articles on a variety of topics. She provides professional learning opportunities both nationally and internationally and mentors professionals pursuing certification in Listening and Spoken Language practice.

Course Requirements

Learners who request CE credits but do not complete all course requirements will receive an email communication at the end of the course. No partial credit will be awarded.

Technology + Materials

To get the most from your learning you'll need:

Pre-Learning

All assignments are tracked and learners can confirm completion on the homepage of the course. It is the learner’s responsibility to ensure that assignments are tracked appropriately. Live Session

Live interactive sessions are held on Adobe Connect, our virtual classroom where you’ll engage with a facilitator. Live sessions are captioned in real-time and recordings are available for review following the session.

Participate in the full live session each week in Adobe Connect. The link will be available on the course homepage on the day of each session.

  • Use a tablet, desktop or laptop computer, not your mobile device.

  • Test your connection and sign in early. The Adobe Connect room opens 20 minutes before the live session starts.

Use the chat feature. If you have connectivity or tracking issues, this serves as our only other record of your attendance in the Adobe Connect live session. You’ll need to:

  • Introduce yourself in the chat once you login.

  • Participate in all questions and polls during the session.

  • Add your name to chat before signing out when the session ends.

Learning Assessment

Complete the self-assessment and course evaluation survey. The link is emailed the day after the final live session. You may return to the course homepage to access the link. Surveys will not be accepted after the 2-week deadline on 05/24/2023 at 11:59pm ET.

Certificate of Completion

After completing the survey you’ll receive an email with a link to the course homepage to download a customized Certificate of Completion.

  • Examine 21st century literacy-related skills, a skill-based reading model, milestones, intervention strategies, activities, and parent guidance practices to promote vocabulary growth in the development of age-appropriate literacy and independent reading.
  • Describe research findings, milestones, intervention strategies, activities, and parent guidance practices to promote language development (syntax and semantics) in the acquisition of age-appropriate literacy and independent reading.
  • Examine the research linking phonological awareness and decoding skills, the continuum of complexity, intervention strategies, activities, and parent guidance practices to facilitate the acquisition of skills essential for age-appropriate literacy and independent reading.
  • Describe research findings, typical development, intervention strategies, activities, and parent guidance practices to promote the development of story retelling and oral narration skills necessary for age-appropriate literacy and independent reading.
