Evidence-Based Practices in Pediatric Amplification

Learn best practices in hearing aid selection and fitting from two professionals with both clinical and research expertise in pediatric amplification.

This learning experience offers a detailed view of the family experience following diagnosis of hearing loss in a child, with a focus on children ages 0-3 years.

Overview

Proper selection, fitting and verification of hearing aids is essential for a child to have access to sound that enables them to develop listening and spoken language skills. This course will provide updated information regarding best practices used in determining candidacy for hearing aids and assistive technology, with a special emphasis placed on children with mild or unilateral hearing loss, those with moderate to severe loss, and when hearing aids are not enough and a cochlear implant should be considered. Learners will receive information about hearing aid selection focusing on incorporation of hearing test and audibility data, discussion of hearing aid features and advanced signal processing. Evidence-based verification and validation techniques focused on prescriptive targets and in-situ/simulated real ear measures will be reviewed for children ages birth to five years. The learning experience will also include sessions dedicated specifically to discussing barriers to timely receipt of hearing healthcare services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as counseling strategies for parents of newly identified children with hearing loss.

Elizabeth Walker Ph.D., CCC-A/SLP

Dr. Walker is an associate professor and Dean’s Scholar in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa and Director of the Pediatric Audiology Laboratory. Her NIH-funded research focuses on pediatric aural habilitation, specifically examining malleable factors that relate to individual differences in listening and language outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. She has published over 50 peer reviewed articles, is the recipient of two Editor’s Awards from ASHA journals, and has co-authored a textbook on Pediatric Amplification. She currently serves on the ASHA Board of Directors as Audiology member at large.

Financial Disclosures: Dr. Beth Walker receives compensation as Associate Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department at the University of Iowa. She also receives a grant from the NIH.

Caitlin Sapp AuD, Ph.D.

Dr. Sapp is the head of Pediatric Audiology at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and the director of the Early Hearing Loss Lab. She completed her Au.D. training and her Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. She has extensive experience in infant hearing assessment and case management and has collaborated with state EHDI departments on quality improvement efforts related to audiology services. Her research interests include examining the factors that improve language and social outcomes for children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, in particular malleable clinician factors like parent counseling.

Course Requirements

Learners who request CE credits but do not complete all course requirements will receive an email communication at the end of the course. No partial credit will be awarded.

Live Session

Live interactive sessions are held on Adobe Connect, our virtual classroom where you’ll engage with a facilitator. Live sessions are captioned in real-time and recordings are available for review following the session.

Participate in the full live session each week in Adobe Connect. The link will be available on the course homepage on the day of each session.

  • Use a tablet, desktop or laptop computer, not your mobile device.

  • Test your connection and sign in early. The Adobe Connect room opens 20 minutes before the live session starts.

Use the chat feature. If you have connectivity or tracking issues, this serves as our only other record of your attendance in the Adobe Connect live session. You’ll need to:

  • Introduce yourself in the chat once you login.

  • Participate in all questions and polls during the session.

  • Add your name to chat before signing out when the session ends.

Learning Assessment

Complete the self-assessment and course evaluation survey. The link is emailed the day after the final live session. You may return to the course homepage to access the link. Surveys will not be accepted after the 2-week deadline on 05/23/2023 at 11:59pm ET.

Certificate of Completion

After completing the survey you’ll receive an email with a link to the course homepage to download a customized Certificate of Completion.

  • Describe an audibility-based criteria for recommending hearing aids when a child presents with a mild hearing loss or needs to transition to a cochlear implant.
  • Identify barriers to hearing healthcare for children and describe potential solutions.
  • Describe how cumulative auditory experience influences speech and language outcomes for children who are hard of hearing.
  • Describe various counseling strategies that can be used when working with parents whose children recently received a hearing loss diagnosis.
