Engaging and equipping families of young children who are deaf or hard of hearing is fundamental to delivering family-centered listening and spoken language (LSL) early intervention. LSL interventionists build the capacity of family members to promote their child’s auditory, speech and language skills in the everyday routines of family life.
Learners will observe best practices for guiding and coaching families. This experience is designed to deepen understanding of why specific goals, strategies and activities are used based on a specific child and family’s needs.
Expanded to include two weeks of pre-learning with one 90-minute live session to maximize and deepen the learning as follows:
Week 1: Observe and analyze excerpts of an LSLS Cert. AVT intervention session to: identify and understand use of specific LSL strategies and techniques; diagnostically determine a child’s current level of functioning and identify and understand use of specific parent coaching techniques.
Week 2: Observe a video of an entire LSL intervention session to understand how to: organize a session to optimize parent coaching and guidance; implement intervention goals and objectives to support the child's level of development; use LSL strategies and techniques in developmentally appropriate teaching activities; and have as an option the opportunity to complete Academy Form C-3 prior to actively participating in a live session for further discussion with the LSLS professional.
Tamara Elder, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, is a Programs Leader with Hearing First, an educational endeavor of the Oberkotter Foundation. Formerly of Hearts for Hearing in Oklahoma City, Ms. Elder has more than 20 years of experience in providing family centered listening and spoken language services for infants, toddlers, and children with hearing loss working within a multi-disciplinary team approach. She is passionate about today’s opportunities for all families of children with hearing loss to listen and talk. Ms. Elder has served as President of the Oklahoma Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2019 to 2020 and was the recipient of the 2015 Gwen Casey Award for Outstanding Clinical Service by the Oklahoma Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is also a member of AG Bell, American Cochlear Implant Alliance, and the Oklahoma Association for Infant Mental Health. Learners who request CE credits but do not complete all course requirements will receive an email communication at the end of the course. No partial credit will be awarded.

Live interactive sessions are held on Adobe Connect, our virtual classroom where you’ll engage with a facilitator. Live sessions are captioned in real-time
and recordings are available for review following the session.
Participate in the full live session each week in Adobe Connect. The link will be available on the course homepage on the day of each session.
Use a tablet, desktop or laptop computer, not your mobile device.
Test your connection and sign in early. The Adobe Connect room opens 20 minutes before the live session starts.
Use the chat feature. If you have connectivity or tracking issues, this serves as our only other record of your attendance in the Adobe Connect live session. You’ll need to:
Introduce yourself in the chat once you login.
Participate in all questions and polls during the session.
Add your name to chat before signing out when the session ends.
Complete the self-assessment and course evaluation survey. The link is emailed the day after the final live session.
You may return to the course homepage to access the link. Surveys will not be accepted after the 2-week deadline on 03/24/2023 at 11:59pm ET.
After completing the survey you’ll receive an email with a link to the course homepage to download a customized Certificate of Completion.
For professionals seeking LSLS® Structured Video Observation Credit from AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, note the requirements below.
Pre-learning: Complete all pre-learning assignements.
C-3 Form: Complete the C-3 form with the full intervention video and submit by the due date.
Live Session: Attend and participate in the live session.
Feedback Survey: Complete the survey within the 2-week deadline. The link is emailed the day after the course close date or you can find it on the course homepage.
Signed C-3 Form: Receive your signed form within four weeks after the course close date.
Identify and explain at least 3 LSL strategies and techniques implemented in the intervention session to teach spoken language through listening.
Identify and discuss the child’s current level of functioning in at least 3 child developmental areas.
Describe the structure and steps of an LSL intervention session to optimize parent engagement and coaching to build capacity in families.
Identify and discuss at least 3 parent coaching strategies and techniques implemented in the session.
Continuing education credits are offered for this learning experience. Although there’s no cost to you as a participant to register or earn credit for this course, your full commitment to participate and engage in the learning is considered your contribution.
