Overview

In this course we will discuss the impact of hearing aid and cochlear implant wear time on spoken language outcomes. We will include data indicating a minimum wear time recommendation. The course will discuss how LSL interventionists and audiologists can work together to support families to meet this goal. Evidence-based strategies that can be used to improve health behavior adherence, with specific attention paid to addressing challenges with wearing hearing devices, will be discussed. The course will be co-taught with professionals from the disciplines of psychology, audiology, and speech-language pathology.

Erika Gagnon AuD, CCC-A

Dr. Gagnon is a Pediatric Cochlear Implant Audiologist & Clinical Assistant Professor at the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC. She received her undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC in 2014. Her clinical interests included datalogging, pediatric EAS and expanded cochlear implant indications.

Financial Disclosures: Dr. Gagnon receives compensation as a Pediatric Cochlear Implant Audiologist/Clinical Assistant Professor at Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at the University of North Carolina. She is also the Audiology Clinic manager and the manager for the Carolina Children’s Communicative Disorders Program (CCCDP) Grant.

Non-financial disclosures: Dr. Gagnon is a State Champion for ACIA, and Audiology Sub-Committee Head at NC Council for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She is co-author of, “The Impact of Cumulative Cochlear Implant Wear Time on Spoken Language Outcomes at Age 3 Years” published in the Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research (2021); “Pediatric Cochlear Implant Wear Time and Early Language Development”, published in Cochlear Implants International (2020); & “Age at Full Time-Use Predicts Language Outcomes Better Than Age of Surgery in Children Who Use Cochlear Implants” published in the American Journal of Audiology (2019).

Hannah Eskridge MSP, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT

Ms. Eskridge is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the Director of the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC. She has been working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families for over 20 years. She conducts Listening and Spoken Language parent participation sessions and tele-therapy sessions. Her primary interests are related to the use of strengths-based coaching with professionals throughout the world in order to see the field of Listening and Spoken Language expand, as well as working with families just beginning their journey in teaching their children to listen and talk, particularly vulnerable families with limited resources.

She is the recipient of grant that supports LSL programming. She receives compensation from Hearing First as a Mentor in the mentoring cohort course, Journey Toward LSLS Certification.

Kimberly Guion Reynolds Ph.D., ABPP

Dr. Reynolds is a pediatric psychologist and Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University. She has specialized, since 2010, in working with youth with special health care needs including chronic medical conditions and developmental disabilities. Dr. Reynolds engages in a blend of direct clinical care and research and is the Training Director for the Psychology Internship Program at OHSU. Her current research focuses on program development and training. She developed an interprofessional provider training related to improving patient adherence to hearing device wear time, which is also a current focus of her research. Dr. Reynolds is a member of the Society of Pediatric Psychology and her faculty role is supported in part by funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA).

Financial Disclosures: Dr. Reynolds is an Associate Professor within Pediatrics at the Institute on Development & Disability at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR. She is also a recipient of NIH Grant and HRSA Grants.

Non-financial disclosures: Dr. Reynolds is a member and serves as co-chair for the Professional Wellness SIG and the Advocacy Co-Chair of the Obesity SIG, Society of Pediatric Psychology. She is the site Principal Investigator for “Behavioral Interventions for Improving Hearing Device Wear Time” at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Portland, OR in partnership with UNC, Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. She serves on the Department of Pediatrics Education Advisory Council. She is a licensed psychologist, conferring a bias towards behaviorally-focused intervention.

Course Requirements

Learners who request CE credits but do not complete all course requirements will receive an email communication at the end of the course. No partial credit will be awarded.

Live Session

Live interactive sessions are held on Adobe Connect, our virtual classroom where you’ll engage with a facilitator. Live sessions are captioned in real-time and recordings are available for review following the session.

Participate in the full live session each week in Adobe Connect. The link will be available on the course homepage on the day of each session.

  • Use a tablet, desktop or laptop computer, not your mobile device.

  • Test your connection and sign in early. The Adobe Connect room opens 20 minutes before the live session starts.

Use the chat feature. If you have connectivity or tracking issues, this serves as our only other record of your attendance in the Adobe Connect live session. You’ll need to:

  • Introduce yourself in the chat once you login.

  • Participate in all questions and polls during the session.

  • Add your name to chat before signing out when the session ends.

Learning Assessment

Complete the self-assessment and course evaluation survey. The link is emailed the day after the final live session. You may return to the course homepage to access the link. Surveys will not be accepted after the 2-week deadline on 04/04/2023 at 11:59pm ET.

Certificate of Completion

After completing the survey you’ll receive an email with a link to the course homepage to download a customized Certificate of Completion.
