This learning experience was initially aired in July 2021. Engaging and equipping families of young children who are deaf or hard of hearing is fundamental to delivering family-centered listening and spoken language (LSL) early intervention. LSL interventionists build the capacity of family members to promote their child’s auditory, speech and language skills in the everyday routines of family life.
Learners will observe best practices for guiding and coaching families. This experience is designed to deepen understanding of why specific goals, strategies and activities are used based on a specific child and family’s needs.
Expanded to include two lessons of pre-learning with one 90-minute live session recording to maximize and deepen the learning as follows:
Lesson 1: Observe and analyze excerpts of an LSLS Cert. AVT intervention session to: identify and understand use of specific LSL strategies and techniques; diagnostically determine a child’s current level of functioning and identify and understand use of specific parent coaching techniques.
Lesson 2: Observe a video of an entire LSL intervention session to understand how to: organize a session to optimize parent coaching and guidance; implement intervention goals and objectives to support the child's level of development; use LSL strategies and techniques in developmentally appropriate teaching activities; and have as an option the opportunity to complete Academy Form C-3 prior to reviewing the live session recording for further discussion with the LSLS professional.
Tamara Elder, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, is a Programs Leader with Hearing First, an educational endeavor of the Oberkotter Foundation. Formerly of Hearts for Hearing in Oklahoma City, Ms. Elder has more than 20 years of experience in providing family centered listening and spoken language services for infants, toddlers, and children with hearing loss working within a multi-disciplinary team approach. She is passionate about today’s opportunities for all families of children with hearing loss to listen and talk. Ms. Elder has served as President of the Oklahoma Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2019 to 2020 and was the recipient of the 2015 Gwen Casey Award for Outstanding Clinical Service by the Oklahoma Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is also a member of AG Bell, American Cochlear Implant Alliance, and the Oklahoma Association for Infant Mental Health.Financial Disclosures: Elder receives compensation from Hearing First as Programs Leader. Non-financial Disclosures: Ms. Elder is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), holds Certification of Clinical Competency (CCC) from ASHA. She is also a member of American Cochlear Implant Alliance and Oklahoma Association for Infant Mental Health.
Learners who request CE credits but do not complete all course requirements will receive an email communication at the end of the course. No partial credit will be awarded.

After completing the survey you’ll receive an email with a link to the course homepage to download a customized Certificate of Completion.
For professionals seeking LSLS® Structured Video Observation Credit from AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, note the requirements below.
Identify and explain at least 3 LSL strategies and techniques implemented in the intervention session to teach spoken language through listening.
Identify and discuss the child’s current level of functioning in at least 3 child developmental areas.
Describe the structure and steps of an LSL intervention session to optimize parent engagement and coaching to build capacity in families.
Identify and discuss at least 3 parent coaching strategies and techniques implemented in the session.
Continuing education credits are offered for this learning experience. Although there’s no cost to you as a participant to register or earn credit for this course, your full commitment to participate and engage in the learning is considered your contribution.
