Children today born deaf or hard of hearing have unprecedented opportunities to reach their full potential as they interact with the world around them and learn to listen and talk alongside their siblings and peers. We don’t have a moment to spare, so let’s start learning! For children to reach their full potential, the adults in their lives must have a strong knowledge base of typical development and professionals need the ability to coach and guide parents to become effective facilitators in all areas of development. Parents, teachers, caregivers and professionals must be continually stretching a child's development by keeping one step ahead of them. This means knowing what’s next! It also means knowing when a child is veering a bit too far off the path and discovering ways to unlock potential in each and every child.
This learning experience will focus on areas of typical development for ages 18 - 36 months where we’ll share and answer some important questions: What’s happening in the brain during this critical time period? What has the biggest impact on developing brains? How do we focus on theory of mind, literacy and social skills from the start? Perhaps the biggest question of all: how do we stay current and continue to ensure every child who is deaf or hard of hearing reaches their full potential?
Sherri Fickenscher, M.S., LSLS Cert. AVEd, is an Education Support Specialist and Early Interventionist at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech in Pennsylvania. Live interactive sessions are held on Adobe Connect, our virtual classroom where you’ll engage with a facilitator. Live sessions are captioned in real-time
and recordings are available for review following the session.
Participate in the full live session each week in Adobe Connect. The link will be available on the course homepage on the day of each session.
Use a tablet, desktop or laptop computer, not your mobile device.
Test your connection and sign in early. The Adobe Connect room opens 20 minutes before the live session starts.
Use the chat feature. If you have connectivity or tracking issues, this serves as our only other record of your attendance in the Adobe Connect live session. You’ll need to:
Introduce yourself in the chat once you login.
Participate in all questions and polls during the session.
Add your name to chat before signing out when the session ends.
Complete the self-assessment and course evaluation survey. The link is emailed the day after the final live session.
You may return to the course homepage to access the link. Surveys will not be accepted after the 2-week deadline on 08/17/2022 at 11:59pm ET.
After completing the survey you’ll receive an email with a link to the course homepage to download a customized Certificate of Completion.
Continuing education credits are offered for this learning experience. Although there’s no cost to you as a participant to register or earn credit for this course, your full commitment to participate and engage in the learning is considered your contribution.
