Be a Director and Be a Bird Dog in Action

As you practice Be a Director and Be a Bird Dog, you’ll discover endless opportunities to use these strategies together to build your baby’s brain for listening. With a little practice, these strategies will soon become part of your everyday life and conversations with your little one. So, let’s put them into action!

You can try these strategies during everyday moments, like when a family member comes home.

Here’s an example of how you can use these strategies in this common routine:

  • When a family member opens the garage door or comes into the house...
    • Be a Director, point to your ear, and say, “Listen!”
    • Pause for your baby to react, look around, or show anticipation.
    • Say, “I heard something. I wonder who it could be?”
    • Then, go find the sound. You could say, “Let’s go find out!”
  • Walk toward the garage to listen more closely...
    • Be a Bird Dog and describe what the sound means.
    • Let your baby experience the sound with you.
    • You could say, “I heard the garage door open!”
    • Imitate the sound and describe it by saying, “Raarrrr. The door’s opening. Now I hear dad’s car! Dad’s home!”
    • Then, meet dad at the door.
    • Your baby just learned what the sound of the garage door means!

What Do You Notice?

What you observe matters! Take note of what your baby is doing as you practice the Be a Director and Be a Bird Dog strategies. Be sure to share your observations with your LSL interventionist and professional team.

  • How does your baby respond to sounds at home and outside? Keep a list of what your baby hears.
  • When you point to your ear to let your baby know you heard a sound, how do they respond? Look for quieting, stopping movement, looking around, or showing anticipation.
  • With familiar sounds or voices, how does your baby let you know they heard and recognize the sound? One example may be looking toward the door when the doorbell rings.
