How To: Reduce Noise at Home

Take simple steps to create a quieter listening environment.

Image of a mother sitting close to her baby son at the table as they play with toys together. She smiles at him, while the boy, who is wearing hearing devices, laughs and looks at the toys on the table in the bright room.

Now that you’ve identified the competing noises in your home, you can take a few simple steps to reduce those sounds so your baby can have the best possible access to the words you say to them!

Try out these techniques:

  • Do a listening audit during different times of the day around your home. Pay attention to where background sounds come from – are they coming from certain rooms, appliances, or devices?
  • Find different times for loud appliances and sound makers. Consider watching TV, running the dishwasher, washing clothes, and vacuuming after your baby’s bedtime or during their naps.
  • Make noisy rooms quieter by putting rugs over hard flooring.

Remember!

Keeping your home free of background noise isn’t always easy, but your efforts are making a difference in supporting your little one’s listening and talking skills!

Congratulations!
