How To: Add Music to Your Baby’s Reading Routine

Many baby books have wonderful rhythm, rhyme, and repetition that can be easily turned into songs.

Choose a favorite book and try singing it to your baby during reading time. Your baby will love hearing your voice, and the music will keep them engaged and learning!

Here are some ideas to try adding in music as you read with your little one:

  • Old McDonald: You can sing this song with any book picturing farm animals. Your baby will love to hear the animal sounds in this repetitive tune. As you sing, sway with your baby so they can feel the rhythm.
  • Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle: Try using the LSL strategy, Hear It Before They See It, and say the animal names and sounds before you turn the page.
  • Llama Llama, Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney: In this story, Baby Llama shows lots of feelings and emotions. Be a Drama Mama or Dramatic Daddy as you sing this wonderful story with your baby and add silly voices.
