How To: Take Turns with Your Baby

It takes two to have a conversation, and your baby has lots to say.

Your back-and-forth conversations build your baby’s brain for listening and spoken language. Plus, they’re important for early social skills! Give your baby lots of turns to keep the conversation going.

Try these tips to give your baby a turn:

Talk about what you and your baby are doing. You could say, “Let’s put your socks Where’s that little foot?” Hold the socks by your baby’s foot, pause, and expect a response.
Tune in. What does your baby say or do? Do they kick, smile, or coo?
Talk about it. You could say, “You kicked your little feet. I heard you coo. Let’s put your socks on.”
Keep the conversation going. You could say, “What should we do next?” Tune in, pause, expect a response, and follow your baby’s lead.
