How To: Listen to Your Baby’s Devices

The best way to help your baby listen is by making sure their devices sound clear and are amplifying sound.

Bookmark this section to easily refer back to the steps for listening to your baby’s devices.

Follow these steps to listen to your baby’s devices:

  • Make sure the devices and batteries are fully charged. You can do this by using the battery tester from your baby’s pediatric audiologist. If your baby uses rechargeable hearing aids, the audiologist can show you how to check if the devices are fully charged.
  • Put the device listening tube in your ear.
  • Turn the hearing aids on. Many devices will beep several times or produce a “start-up sound” before starting to amplify.
  • Once you know the hearing aids are on, put the end of the listening tube on the earmold and listen quietly for a few seconds. The hearing aids should sound loud but clear.
  • Pay attention to any inconsistent sound, static, muffled sounds, or if the hearing aid seems too quiet.
  • Be sure to also listen for unusual audio feedback, even when you hold the hearing aid far from your hand.
  • Say the Ling 6 Sounds, "m, oo, ah, ee, sh, s,” and make sure you can hear each sound clearly.
  • Say a short sentence and listen to how the hearing aid sounds. It should sound loud but clear.
  • Listen to both hearing aids.
  • If you think either hearing aid is not working, call your pediatric audiologist right away.

Remember, it takes practice to learn how your baby’s hearing aids should sound. At first, they’ll likely sound loud and different than how you hear. This is normal, and you’ll become an expert at listening to your baby’s hearing aids over time.

Pro Parent Tip!

When you change your baby’s hearing aid batteries, put the battery sticker on your wall calendar for that day or make a note on your phone calendar. This helps you know about how long your baby’s batteries last and when they’ll need to be changed again.

Congratulations!
