Review the key points you learned throughout this lesson:

  • Reading to your baby, even as a newborn, for at least 15 minutes a day is important because it grows their thinking skills, understanding, curiosity, and creativity while preparing them to learn in school. Learning to read starts on day one!
  • You can make reading a daily habit by selecting times throughout the day to share books and always keeping books at your fingertips.
  • Talk about everything that’s happening on the book pages. The goal is not to finish the whole book but to help your baby hear new and exciting words to grow their brain.
  • Have fun as you read with your baby, and focus on meaningful interactions like using different sounds, sing-song voices, and the element of surprise to keep your baby engaged.
  • As you read, make observations of how your baby responds (do they kick their legs, move their arms, wiggle, reach for the book, or coo?). Share what you notice with your professional team.
