Math Through Reading: Books for Introducing Math

Calling all parents on the hunt for fresh reads for your little learner! Have you ever thought about how books and reading can help with math skills? Our kids will grow up to be our future problem-solvers, scientists, and tech whizzes! That’s why it’s important to incorporate math when sharing books.

Literacy is a lot more than just reading and writing. Literacy skills include math and problem-solving. Don’t wait for your little one to be in school to build those literacy skills. With books and reading, you can introduce math at an early age and in a fun way.

Literacy Skills for Children with Hearing Loss

Children who are deaf or hard of hearing are developing age-appropriate literacy skills with Listening and Spoken Language (LSL). This is important because starting in third grade, children are no longer learning to read and transition to reading to learn! It’s important your child with hearing loss can read at grade level by third grade. You can help make that happen by making reading a part of your child’s everyday routine.

Favorites from the Professionals

We polled hundreds of professionals — speech language pathologists and auditory verbal therapists — and asked for their favorite books to introduce different math concepts while reading aloud to little ones!
