Reading aloud every day helps children with hearing loss build literacy skills. Here are five “humor” books with specific concepts, skills and activities for incorporating Listening and Spoken Language strategies into your reading time.
Laughing together can be a great way to connect with your child who is deaf or hard of hearing. What most people don’t realize is a sense of humor is actually a learned trait. One you can foster in your child. A sense of humor develops as the brain’s ability to process information develops. You’ll start to see signs of linguistic humor when our child can hear and begin to process the meanings behind words. They reference the meanings of those words based on their understanding of the past and might laugh when something is out of sync. This understanding of “how the world works” allows them to “get the joke” when something is out of place. A sense of humor not only brightens your time with your family, but it also helps children to be smarter, healthier and better able to meet societal expectations. When you read aloud books that have humorous subjects, you are well on your way to growing your baby's brain for language, literacy and laughter. We’ve put together a list of humorous books for you to read with your child to help to not only understand humor but develop their own sense of humor.
